IELTS

IELTS i.e. International English Language Testing System is a standardized English proficiency test. It assesses English Language skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP- Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL EXAMINATIONS.

IELTS has two types of modules – Academic and General Training. Academic Module is required to be given by students who plan to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. While, General Training Module is generally a prerequisite for the people who either want to pursue vocational studies or plan to immigrate.

Listening : It has 4 sections and 40 questions in all. It lasts for 40 minutes including the time one gets for transferring the answers to the main answer sheet.

Reading : Reading has 3 passages, 40 questions in all. Candidates are given only 1 hour to complete reading, which means that time management is very important. One must give 20 minutes per passage.

 Writing : Academic Module It has 2 writing tasks. Task 1 is primarily Report writing (explaining diagrams and charts). Essay on task 1 must not be less than 150 words. Students are advised to spend 20 minutes on this task. Task 2 is Argumentative essay. Essay on task 2 must not be less than 250 words. Students are advised to spend 40 minutes on the same. In all, time allotted for writing is 1 hour.

General Training Module It also has 2 writing tasks. Task1 presents a Letter Prompt (formal or informal). Students must write at least 150 words for the same. Task2 is same as that of Academic Module. •

Speaking : Speaking has 3 parts and lasts for 11-14 minutes. It is done on one-to-one basis with the student.

  • Part1: Examiner asks general questions to the student, which relates to his/her work, studies, hobbies etc. This part lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.
  • Part2: The candidate is given a topic to speak, which is printed on a task card. Students have to speak for 1 minute at least and are given one minute to think and write down some points. This part lasts between 3 and 4 minutes.
  • Part3: It’s a two way discussion with the examiner (questions mostly related to part 2 topic will be asked).The discussion lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.

SCORING : IELTS is graded on a scale of 0 – 9, known as Band Scale. Generally, a score of at least 6 bands for UG & 6.5 bands for PG is required in each section. The result is available in 15 working days.

 

Why C.Ed. for IELTS/PTE/TOEFL Coaching

We have well trained and professional staff for IELTS/TOEFL/PTE. On the first day of coaching we conduct a mock test to know where a student stands. After the mock is taken and the scores are given, we start with the teaching sessions. During the training, we guide the students providing all the details and knowledge one requires to appear for IELTS/TOEFL/PTE. We make the students practice sufficient number of tests. After classroom sessions are over, we conduct mock tests simulating the testing conditions.

Teaching methodology for IELTS/TOEFL/PTE

For listening, we play audios and students answer the questions. The times are strictly followed so that the students get the first hand experience of examination environment. The answers are discussed towards the end of the test and strategies are provided that help students score better in listening. For Reading, the trainers provide the details about various question types, approach and reasoning for answering the same and give sufficient practice to master the reading skill. Discussion is an integral part of reading sessions. With regards to Writing, strategies are discussed and the students are guided on how to improve their writing skills. Faculties make students practice writing in the class and accordingly the scores are given. Speaking is done one on one with the students as per test format. The questions are asked and the answers are discussed. The scoring is done and guidelines are given to improve the scores.

Human Resource Management Post-Baccalaureate Diploma

A post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.

Laddering

Post-baccalaureate students may receive exemptions in the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration which must be completed prior to applying to the MBA. The number of exemptions awarded depends on the requirements of the post-baccalaureate diploma. Students must receive a grade of B or higher in the equivalent undergraduate courses to be exempted.

As a student in the Environmental Technology program, you’ll be technically skilled and able to constructively work within traditional engineering industries. You’ll also possess leadership attributes and knowledge that will make a difference. Your studies will focus on environmental technology, water resources and applied sciences, engineering and problem-solving abilities, and public and communications skills.

In your final two semesters, you’ll benefit from advanced computer modelling, water management and analytical courses. Upon graduation, you’ll have the skills, understanding and ability to succeed within the environmental sector. This program is your key to a rewarding career in this exciting and fast-growing industry.

Your Career

If you’re passionate about the environment, our Environmental Technology (EMT) program could have you working in a variety of rewarding roles in just six semesters. Your career could include employment with environmental, engineering, planning consulting firms, government agencies, private contractors, municipalities, utilities and telecommunication firms. Your work will involve environmental assessment investigations, environmental sampling, data collection and monitoring, mapping, data management, computer modelling, watershed planning, land development, construction monitoring, supervision and inspection, surveying, and municipal and transportation planning and engineering design. Earn your Environmental Technology advanced diploma and pursue a career as a designer, supervisor, project manager, co-ordinator, water resources modeller or inspector on construction projects, subdivisions and environmental protection and enhancement initiatives.

Co-operative Education Option

Students from both the Environmental Technology and Technician programs can benefit from an optional co-operative education program. Once you’ve completed semester one with passing grades in all subjects, and met appropriate GPA requirements, you’ll be eligible to apply.

There are valuable services to facilitate placement opportunities available for students enrolling in the program in semester two. You’ll gain access to them through the Co-op Professional Practice subject and co-op facilities. The co-op program consists of one work term from May to August that provides a wealth of valuable course-related experience, employer contacts and greater opportunities for permanent placement after graduation.

This two-year Marketing program will open doors to opportunities in the exciting and fast-moving field of business, specifically consumer product and service marketing.

Description

For those who want to fast-track into the exciting marketing world, this program will open the door to a variety of marketing career opportunities.

In this two-year (4 semester) Marketing program, you will learn to:

  • Describe the core concepts of marketing through lecture, case studies, group interaction and marketing situations.
  • Use the building blocks of a marketing plan to analyze the market, the customers and the competition.
  • Describe the purpose and value of effective market research and design.

A contemporary, full time, MBA for individuals with non-business undergraduate degrees and under five years of professional work experience. A two-year curriculum is condensed into 12 months of intensive coursework, designed to provide students with a broad portfolio of skills as they advance their young careers. This MBA program was launched in September 2007. It is the first of its kind and is still unique in Canada.

Program Overview

The full time MBA is a hands-on, fast-track program that lasts just 12 months, but prepares you for a lifetime of career opportunities.

  • The core curriculum builds a foundation in functional management areas: finance, accounting, marketing, operations, economics and strategy.
  • A set of exploratory courses encourages you to observe and question your assumptions: an international field study trip to a Pacific Rim country; essays that examine and strategically analyse a region, industry or firm; a new ventures course that develops the entrepreneurial vision and mindset; and a three-to-eight month internship at the end of the academic program to consolidate and apply learning to the workplace.

Performance Testing

A vital component of the 12-month MBA is the internship following the academic program, since most students have minimal practical experience in management-track positions, and few opportunities to obtain that needed experience. The internship will enhance your resume with paid work experience. It is also a perfect opportunity to make industry connections, identify possible positions you’d like to explore, and create introductions to other organizations that may be looking for management trainees. Unlike other programs, our Internship comes at the end of the academic program, so graduates can transition directly into the workforce.

Accelerated Pace

The 12-month academic curriculum is the equivalent of most 18 – 24 month programs. We’ve compressed the schedule by eliminating extended downtimes between the three semesters and filling the time with options like the international field study trip.

Distance Training

MBA students will have the opportunity to join an international field study trip, scheduled for Spring 2009. Destinations under consideration: Tokyo or Mumbai. Led by respected faculty members in international business, this is a unique look at business practices, cultural differences and future opportunities. Qualification Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a discipline other than business, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 (75% or “B”) or successful completion of the SFU Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with a 3.5 CGPA
  • Five years or less work experience
  • GMAT minimum of 550
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English. Students whose first language is not English, or who obtained their undergraduate degree from an institution where the main language of instruction was not English, are required to take either the TOEFL or IELTS
  • Three letters of reference from supervisors or professors and colleagues
  • Personal statement including self-evaluation and educational objectives

The Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program focuses on civil infrastructure design, construction, repair and restoration strategies, business and management optimization, and applied research related to the current and emerging tools of infrastructure management and renewal. Students gain the knowledge and skills needed to address infrastructure deterioration by investigating and applying the latest technologies to solving problems.

Description

Canada’s civil infrastructure delivers essential services and is comprised of highways, roads and bridges, as well as systems for water supply, storm water management and waste water treatment. Many elements of this infrastructure are deteriorating and, in addition, there is a growing need to examine and update systems that were designed to transport energy and fuel to include renewable energy sources.

The Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program focuses on civil infrastructure design, construction, repair and restoration strategies, business and management optimization, and applied research related to the current and emerging tools of infrastructure management and renewal.

Students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to address infrastructure deterioration by investigating and applying the latest technologies to solving problems. Students will be able to make the business decisions leading to lower maintenance and repair costs, along with higher levels of service to promote public health, the environment and the economic prosperity of our communities.

Program Standards and Learning Outcomes

Program standards apply to all similar programs of instruction offered by colleges across the province. Each program standard for a postsecondary program of instruction includes the following elements:

  • Vocational standard (the vocationally specific learning outcomes which apply to the program in question),
  • Essential employability skills (the essential employability skills learning outcomes which apply to all programs of instruction), and
  • General education requirement (the requirement for general education in postsecondary programs of instruction).

The vocational and essential employability skills components of program standards are expressed in terms of learning outcomes. Learning outcomes represent culminating demonstrations of learning and achievement. In addition, learning outcomes are interrelated and cannot be viewed in isolation of one another. As such, they should be viewed as a comprehensive whole. They describe performances that demonstrate that significant integrated learning by graduates of the program has been achieved and verified.
