Work Permit in Australia for Students

Work conditions for Student visa holders

You cannot work until you have commenced your course in Australia. Once your course has commenced you are permitted to work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session, and unlimited hours when your course is not in session.

  • Work that is a formal registered part of your course is not included in the limit of 40 hours per fortnight.
  • If you are doing voluntary, unpaid work, it is not included in the limit of 40 hours per fortnight if it:
    • is of benefit to the community
    • is for a non-profit organisation
    • would not otherwise be undertaken in return for wages by an Australian resident (that is, it is a designated volunteer position), and
    • is genuinely voluntary (that is, no remuneration, either in cash or kind is received—board and lodging acceptable).
  • If you are a subclass 574 (Postgraduate research sector) student visa holder and you have commenced your masters by research or doctoral degree in Australia, there is no limit on the number of hours you may work.
  • You can work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight during any preliminary courses you undertake on a subclass 574 (Postgraduate research sector) student visa.

An example of how 40 hours a fortnight is calculated: After their course has commenced, a student visa holder works the following numbers of hours over a four week period:

  • week 1 – 15 hours work
  • week 2 – 25 hours work
  • week 3 – 25 hours work
  • week 4 – 10 hours work.

In the fortnight comprising weeks 1 and 2 above (40 hours worked in that 14 day period) or in the fortnight comprising weeks 3 and 4 above (35 hours worked in that 14 day period), the work condition is not breached. However, the student visa holder has breached their work condition in the fortnight comprising weeks 2 and 3 above (50 hours worked in that 14 day period). Students found to have breached their work conditions may be subject to cancellation of their visa.

Study in New Zealand without IELTS

Students thinking of applying for further studies in New Zealand. There’s some good news for you. You can now do so without sitting for the IELTS!

Think of giving IELTS a miss! but, conditions apply.

Must Know:

Category 1 institutes in New Zealand can waive off IELTS scores for international students whose first language is not English.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has put in place certain exemptions to IELTS by non-university tertiary education providers for international students whose first language is not English.

As of now, these exemptions are confined to Category 1 institutes that have their own ways of determining the proficiency in English of international students. The results of these tests, however, should be at par with those of the IELTS. This implies that the testing procedures of these institutes should be of a quality, as good as the international ones such as the IELTS.

Category 2 onwards all institutes are required to make IELTS scores admission criteria for students whose first language is’t English.

Category 1 institutes have their own ways of assessing the levels of proficiency required in Engish of International students. However, they do expect the result to be at par with those of IELTS. It implies that procedures and assessment are carried out via their own tests. This could happen is person, electronically, or on the phone, if you are able to convince your institute that you have a good understanding and command over the English language, they are likely to waive the IELTS for you.

In order to get IELTS waiver, you  will  have to convince your prospective category 1 institute of your English medium background and also fulfill their assessment criteria.

Documents Required:

After having fulfilled the assessment criteria of the category 1 institute of your choice, you will be required to submit the following documents.

  • Your marksheets of entire schooling years or of classes VIII to XII (stating clearly the medium of institutions to be in English.
  • A Certificate from school(s) confirming that you studies with them for the duration stated.
