Program Description

Contribute to the future. Build a career where urban and human needs intersect with respect for the earth’s resources. You could become a leader in an industry that’s shaping our world.

As a student in the Environmental Technology program, you’ll be technically skilled and able to constructively work within traditional engineering industries. You’ll also possess leadership attributes and knowledge that will make a difference. Your studies will focus on environmental technology, water resources and applied sciences, engineering and problem-solving abilities, and public and communications skills.

In your final two semesters, you’ll benefit from advanced computer modelling, water management and analytical courses. Upon graduation, you’ll have the skills, understanding and ability to succeed within the environmental sector. This program is your key to a rewarding career in this exciting and fast-growing industry.

Pathways exist to other programs such as Environmental Sampling and Monitoring and Project Management – Environmental among others.

Admission Requirements

Program Eligibility:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with:
    • Grade 12 English: ENG4(C) or ENG4(U)
    • Grade 12 Mathematics: (C) or (U) or Grade 11 Mathematics: MCR3(U)
  • OR Mature Student Status (age 19 or older) with the above prerequisite course(s), their equivalent(s) or appropriate Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) Certificate program credits (see Academic Upgrading).

  • Students who do not meet these requirements may be given an alternate offer for the Applied Science and Technology Fundamentals certificate program.

Your Career

If you’re passionate about the environment, our Environmental Technology (EMT) program could have you working in a variety of rewarding roles in just six semesters. Your career could include employment with environmental, engineering, planning consulting firms, government agencies, private contractors, municipalities, utilities and telecommunication firms. Your work will involve environmental assessment investigations, environmental sampling, data collection and monitoring, mapping, data management, computer modelling, watershed planning, land development, construction monitoring, supervision and inspection, surveying, and municipal and transportation planning and engineering design. Earn your Environmental Technology advanced diploma and pursue a career as a designer, supervisor, project manager, co-ordinator, water resources modeller or inspector on construction projects, subdivisions and environmental protection and enhancement initiatives.

Co-operative Education Option

Students from both the Environmental Technology and Technician programs can benefit from an optional co-operative education program. Once you’ve completed semester one with passing grades in all subjects, and met appropriate GPA requirements, you’ll be eligible to apply.

There are valuable services to facilitate placement opportunities available for students enrolling in the program in semester two. You’ll gain access to them through the Co-op Professional Practice subject and co-op facilities. The co-op program consists of one work term from May to August that provides a wealth of valuable course-related experience, employer contacts and greater opportunities for permanent placement after graduation.

Simon Fraser University – Segal Graduate School of Business

A contemporary, full time, MBA for individuals with non-business undergraduate degrees and under five years of professional work experience. A two-year curriculum is condensed into 12 months of intensive coursework, designed to provide students with a broad portfolio of skills as they advance their young careers. This MBA program was launched in September 2007. It is the first of its kind and is still unique in Canada.

Program Overview

The full time MBA is a hands-on, fast-track program that lasts just 12 months, but prepares you for a lifetime of career opportunities.

  • The core curriculum builds a foundation in functional management areas: finance, accounting, marketing, operations, economics and strategy.
  • A set of exploratory courses encourages you to observe and question your assumptions: an international field study trip to a Pacific Rim country; essays that examine and strategically analyse a region, industry or firm; a new ventures course that develops the entrepreneurial vision and mindset; and a three-to-eight month internship at the end of the academic program to consolidate and apply learning to the workplace.
  • We’ll transform how you view not just business, but your place in the world, with a series of courses that illuminate new perspectives on ethics, leadership and team building, cross-cultural management and sustainability.

Performance Testing

A vital component of the 12-month MBA is the internship following the academic program, since most students have minimal practical experience in management-track positions, and few opportunities to obtain that needed experience. The internship will enhance your resume with paid work experience. It is also a perfect opportunity to make industry connections, identify possible positions you’d like to explore, and create introductions to other organizations that may be looking for management trainees. Unlike other programs, our Internship comes at the end of the academic program, so graduates can transition directly into the workforce.

Accelerated Pace

The 12-month academic curriculum is the equivalent of most 18 – 24 month programs. We’ve compressed the schedule by eliminating extended downtimes between the three semesters and filling the time with options like the international field study trip.

Why the intensity? Your time is valuable. We treat it as such. MBA programs are expensive, not only in tuition costs but in the time they take you out of the marketplace. We have priced this program to be a rare value. And by compressing the curriculum, we lower your opportunity costs as well.

Distance Training

Vancouver’s location on the Pacific Rim makes it essential to understand how to do business in international arenas, especially Asia.

MBA students will have the opportunity to join an international field study trip, scheduled for Spring 2009. Destinations under consideration: Tokyo or Mumbai. Led by respected faculty members in international business, this is a unique look at business practices, cultural differences and future opportunities. The trip will include site visits, lectures, cultural events and social networking with MBA students from the host university.

Qualification Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a discipline other than business, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 (75% or “B”) or successful completion of the SFU Graduate Diploma in Business Administration with a 3.5 CGPA
  • Five years or less work experience
  • GMAT minimum of 550
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English. Students whose first language is not English, or who obtained their undergraduate degree from an institution where the main language of instruction was not English, are required to take either the TOEFL or IELTS
  • Three letters of reference from supervisors or professors and colleagues
  • Personal statement including self-evaluation and educational objectives

The Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program focuses on civil infrastructure design, construction, repair and restoration strategies, business and management optimization, and applied research related to the current and emerging tools of infrastructure management and renewal. Students gain the knowledge and skills needed to address infrastructure deterioration by investigating and applying the latest technologies to solving problems.

Description

Canada’s civil infrastructure delivers essential services and is comprised of highways, roads and bridges, as well as systems for water supply, storm water management and waste water treatment. Many elements of this infrastructure are deteriorating and, in addition, there is a growing need to examine and update systems that were designed to transport energy and fuel to include renewable energy sources.

The Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program focuses on civil infrastructure design, construction, repair and restoration strategies, business and management optimization, and applied research related to the current and emerging tools of infrastructure management and renewal.

Students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to address infrastructure deterioration by investigating and applying the latest technologies to solving problems. Students will be able to make the business decisions leading to lower maintenance and repair costs, along with higher levels of service to promote public health, the environment and the economic prosperity of our communities.

Program Standards and Learning Outcomes

Program standards apply to all similar programs of instruction offered by colleges across the province. Each program standard for a postsecondary program of instruction includes the following elements:

  • Vocational standard (the vocationally specific learning outcomes which apply to the program in question),
  • Essential employability skills (the essential employability skills learning outcomes which apply to all programs of instruction), and
  • General education requirement (the requirement for general education in postsecondary programs of instruction).

The vocational and essential employability skills components of program standards are expressed in terms of learning outcomes. This course will provide students key business, hospitality skills and knowledge through 30 weeks of lecture style delivery. Students will also receive real life hotel operations learning in either food and beverage or room division. In addition, applicants for whom English is not their first language will have an IELTS score of 6.5, or equivalent. (no band score lower than 6). This course will provide graduate diploma students key business, hospitality skills and knowledge while being immersed in the PIHMS hotel environment.

Course Outline:

Belfast is Named The UK’s Most Affordable Student City

Belfest has been revealed as the most affordable city for students to live and study in followed closely by Nottingham and Southampton, as shown by recent study.

The 2015 student Living index, conducted by NetWest, interviewed just under 2,500 students to see what they’re spending their time and money on. The index was judged on four key aspects of student life, including: essentials (such as groceries, rent and travel); socializing; sports and fitness; and hobbies and interests.

The index has provided a detailed insight into student life in the UK and offers and table of the top-25 most economical student cities.

As well as revealing that Belfast was the most economical, the study showed that Portsmouth is the mo st cost-effective city for students to socialize but Newcastle’s students spend the most hours socializing. In addition to this, it was  revealed that students are spending less on groceries in comparison to last year’s results but are eating out on a more regular basis.

For the 2,486 students who were in interviews, the majority of their time is spent studying, 27.5 hours per week, compared to the 12.5 hours spent socializing and the four and half hour spent in part-time work. The index also showed the students at Cambridge and Oxford spend most if their time studying but those at Southampton work the longest hours and receive the most-term-time income.

The majority of students are paying for their costs with their students loans the study reveled. Money from parents was the second main course of income for students. According to the report, here are the top five best cities for students to live and study in Belfast.
